We will shortly be going on holiday to Benidorm and are alarmed by the content of your programme at the possibility of incurring great expense if taken ill there. We have taken out insurance but understood that our European Health Insurance Card would cover most problems. Does the hospital featured in Benidorm ER give trreatment under the Spanish Health Service? If so, why did the man in last week's episode have to pay £10000 for his spinal hernia operation. Could he not have got free or reduced cost treatment with his European Health Insurance Card? If it is a private hospital do you know if there is also a National Health Hospital in Benidorm?

On my limited knowledge, it all depends on many factors. One, is that if you are covered by European Health insurance, that is dependant on how long you have been abroad. For instance, if you are paying into the UK system, but move to Spain for longer than three months, you are no longer entitled to full coverage under the scheme and therefore would have to pay your full costs. If, however you are still paying in to the system and have not been out of the UK for longer than three months, you should be covered at least in part. If you are going on holiday with travel insurance you are covered, as long as you do not have any illnesses or conditions that you do no mention therein. If you have travel insurance they would treat you at a private hospital under that. There are national health hospitals everywhere in Spain. But as you have paid for insurance you are going to be fine. Have a lovely time
