Shame this is not available on Demand 5. With all that was going on over the Bank Hol, ! didn't get around to watching/recording this episode. Hope it's repeated again sometime.

Please stop referring to an A4 as a "train". It should be described as locomotive or engine (this also applies to diesel or electric locos also). A train is a set of wagons and/or carriages coupled together into a "train" formation. The locomotive becomes part of the train only when it is attached to the wagons/carriages, and should not be called a train when it is being described in isolation (in this case in the example of an A4, which is a class of steam locomotive).

It is normal practice for the overhead catenary to effectively zigzag across the face of the pantograph head and it was not new to the TGV network. This applies to most overhead line systems to optimise the pantograph head wear and prevent damage to the head and contact wire.

Surely David Williams means the APT not ATP?

There's nothing new about pantagraphs and overhead connections, I sometimes drive Class 86 locos and they've been around since 1965.

I guess they did credit us with the invention of railways and the show sets out to focus on engineering/design success and the lack of the ATP in service isn't much of one.

if it had not been for the forward thinking of Darlington MP Edward Pease none of this would of happened. Give credit to where it is due DARLINGTON to STOCKTON

Most of the technologies described in this program, and ascribed to French and Japanese engineers, were actually developed by Britsh engineers in the 1960's and demonstrated in the ATP project (see Wikipedia)....
