This show is brilliant . Thought I would be watching just another standard car restore show and found myself crying with laughter at the look on Bernie's face every time something goes wrong (even if it may be staged). T.V. should be about entertainment and this show really is entertaining. Look forward to seeing every episode, keep up the good work channel 5.
I am looking to restore a mini myself. Watched this episode to get some tips. Very little actual knowledge or techiques given around the restore. Dont bother watching if your in the same position as me. You will learn very little! Must admit it was good to see old footage of some minis in action though. I dont understand why it has to be present by a yank and the most annoying loud mouth mechanic in Britain. James May would be an ideal host in my opinion. I agree with alot of folks on here that the fake disaster every week is just not necessary. People who watch these programmes arnt into that. I'd rather see more around the actual restoration.
As a programe to entertain it is good but the problem is ordinary punters look at this go and get a scrapper and expect a garage to turn it around in a week for 500 quid. The well informed know that you hardly every get back the amount of time and money if you have restored the car properly. What every happened to LEPO? Dillon has damaged his credability as a car valuer by over valueing the cars on the the program
id love to see the short tempered sod do an austin maxi which were rot boxes or an afasud. i bet the welders would walk out on ol bernie.
i was a mechanic for 23yrs before retiring on ill health and can honestly say bernie would either be alone in his workshop after i left or in an ambulance nursing a good slapping.
ive worked for his type of gobby gaffer before and the best way to motivate your staff is to earn respect from them - not go all out shouting at them.
this series is as bad as the last bernie series with leepoo or whatever his name was.
Ok so it wasn't 100% proper restoration, but two weeks later and I'm missin' these Guys.
Give 'em a cooking show Love to see Bernie & Mario in a kitchen..... Bernie 'n all his Cockney mates, and Mario cooking a lovely Lasagne out the packet.
Bring 'em back soon
why is it that the car that was sent to see if it was alined is not the car they were restoring as if you take a look the car sent to be checked clearly has the later side repeaters on the wing so show is misleading and i crindge at the way the clasic was repeared and how the hell can a a few dacals wthin some second hand parts be 5 gand get real
This show is so unrealistic that it gives everyone a bad name. In most episodes they rebadge the car to present it as a premium model. Putting Cooper badges and stickers on a bod standard BL mini is misrepresentation and should have been picked up by the "valuer". True value of a car with the wrong badges should be zero.
The staged emergency each week is ridiculous, backing the e-type into an engine block, setting the mini on fire, dropping the Mustang screen, its all just an excuse for the bald fat guy to jump up and down and scream.
Juvenile entertainment possibly, serious its not.
If they were going to do a job, they might as well have done it properly. They plucked a timescale of a week out of the air and stuck to it for no apparent reason. Could they not have phoned the valuer to postpone him?! And spraying a car with the engine in??? They could have had the engine out in the time they p'd about with WD40! And I'm still waiting to hear how they fixed the engine. Yes, I know it's only a one hour show, etc, etc, but we could have done without the ENDLESS recaps and previews before & after the ads and been shown other stuff. And don't get me started on those awful eithties-style recessed driving lamps!
RESTORE A MINI AND TURN INTO A MONGREL IN 7 DAYS PAY £720 FOR MINI , SPEND £2400 ON IT MAKING IT LOOK LIKE SOMETHING IT IS NOT , AND THEN GET A IDIOT TO PUT A VALUE ON IT OF £5000 THE ONLY INFORMATIVE PART OF THE SHOW WAS THE BRIEF SHOTS OF A OLD ENGLISH WHITE AUSTIN COOPER S WITH CORRECT INTERIOR AND COLOUR SCHEME
Strange how a lot of comment have een removed. I won't be wasting my time be entering the contest to win this car. Spose that tells you what I think about this series.
Just watched a recording and freeze framed the scene where they send the Mini off on the back of a breakdown truck for an alignment check.......it is definitely a completely different later Mini used in this scene with later Clubman style dash and top rail, no roof gutter drip rails, front panel with later cut-out hole for passenger eyeball vent intake, repeater holes in wings and 12" wheels and rust patches in completely different areas. The original Mini does seem to re-appear for the final part of the 'restoration' with most of its previously bodged oversills retained but the mis-firing engine seems to have been replaced at some point in the 'rebuild' with a later A+ engine still with remmants of the factory yellow paint on the head and block. Like the MGB GT 'restoration' it seems 2 different cars were used and swapped but not mentioned in the actual programme.
What amuses me is how much they allegedly pay for a scrapper.
As to the valuations, oh dear, but it's comedy isn't it?
I ran a car restoration business and when I saw the mini I thought well thats easy, damn near enough pattern panels were available to build a new one for sod all...
But a WEEK!
We Always took the engine and gearbox out and cleaned and sprayed everthing, I am yet to see a lump come out, even on the MGB, thats one car that need the weight taking out before you start chopping it up, perhaps that's why they chose the GT, the roof helps to stop it breaking in half.
I once bought an MGB GT for a fiver.
Did I miss a trick here but the final scenes showed an ordinary mini 1000 with Cooper decals on the sides. I hope any potential buyer isn't led to believe it's a mini Cooper. Why not slap the letter 'S' on it and claim it's really hot? Over to Trading Standards.
how the hell is that worth 5k???!!! i spent a year and and a half, spending 4.5k on my mini !!! mine was rebuilt from a smashed wreck, to a magazine featured car...and was valued at 5k !!!! my engine was the mintest around !!! this programme is an insult to those of us who spend years restoring cars.... its a joke and i want to know how the hell the valuer comes up with those figures....just plucks them out of the sky or else where.....

Place is Palmer Brothers in Mottingham SE London. Been going for years and a great garage. I have one of their 'S' Works conversions on my Cooper Sport :)
Enjoyed this episode , I had one of these Mini 1000s years ago when they were still being made. I'm glad they did a proper job of cutting the rust out .It looked very nice at the end . Bernie shouts quite a bit but I suppose it gives the programme a bit of drama.
looking at the posts on here and find it unbeleivable that people are having a go at the programme and the presenters, its entertaining and light hearted,as most will say if you don't like it don't watch it simple as that.
