Classic Car Rescue

Bernie Fineman

An experienced automotive manager, master technician, workshop controller and technical Engineer.

Bernie Fineman

Bernie is a highly experienced automotive manager, master technician, workshop controller and technical engineer. He’s never happier than when under the bonnet of a car and always works with a smile on his face, but he doesn’t suffer fools gladly and his straight talking attitude means he takes no prisoners!

Bernie’s technical knowledge and vast experience with Mercedes Benz, BMW, Jaguar, Range Rover, Rolls-Royce, Porsche, Ford, Audi, VW and many other Marques make him a force to be reckoned with in the motoring world.

When it comes to automotive television Bernie is a household name! Before “Classic Car Rescue” Bernie was best known for his role in three series of “Chop Shop”, one of Discovery Europe’s most popular shows ever and making him a star for petrol heads all over the world. The first series, “Bangla Bangers”, tested his skills to the limit as he worked with the most basic equipment in Bangladesh. He then returned home for “Chop Shop: London Garage” and finally built remarkable vehicles for stars such as Jools Holland, Johnny Vegas, Martin Kemp, Lawrence Dallaglio and David Ginola

Having given decades of service to the motor industry with his natural charm and cheeky banter (along with the occasional colourful outburst), Bernie is undoubtedly a legend of the East End!

Hey Khan. You are right Bernie and Leepu are legit. The other guy is a clown. Bankrupt, power of sale on his building, business dissolved and not even a legit car dealer. Lost his licence, and customer took him to court for selling his car and keeping money. Some people.

Just watched a few minutes of the Jools Holland Rover episode. Words fail me......I have 32 years plus experience in the motor trade and have spent all that time trying to educate the public over using properly qualified people. Definitely NOT Bernie!!!! Firstly he was asked to recreate an early P4 Rover, so he buys a late P4 (the show reckon it's a 2.8 4 cylinder......no it was a 2.2 on the 80, taken from the Land Rover). Then you see the workers demolishing things with sledge hammers and using cutting tools without goggles!!! I could go on, but I am literally lost for words that a national telelvision company could even comtemplate putting out a programme like this with people giving my industry such a bad name. I am appalled, disgusted and wonder what's next.......maybe a show about banking with someone who can't add up, or one about restoring houses who thinks an extension can be built without proper foundations. You may laugh but this is the honest level that Chop Shop and Bernie are at. Ask any member of the Institute of the Motor Industry what they think of this programme and I'm sure you'll get the same answers and I'm sure of one thing.......Bernie certainly isn't a member of the IMI!

This guys knowledge of cars is truley terrifying. Only a 5 minute viewing of chop shop when describing whats wrong with martin kemps saab turbo left me literally with my mouth open in shock. bearings gone because there is sideways movement (there has to be on any journal turbo), blowing oil (they again have to), and less boost pressure because it is worn?.... jesus

Bernie, that sized Mustang engine is really easy to fix. take off the timing chain, remove the main and connecting rod bearings. Squirt the pistons with Kroil oil, it penetrates one millionth of an inch. Leave overnight, then heat the pistons from the top and bottom, use a 2x2 by 4ft long drive out the pistons from the bottom .Once the pistons are out, knurl them and hone the bore, put in 10 thousand oversize rings fitted to each bore. have the crank cut and put in oversized. the engine will be like new, you may have to size the knurl to fit the bore by sanding . piston rings $40, crank cut $75 bearings $120. total cost $235. I have done this many times on antique car engines. Ray Fiorini

I do sometimes think Bernie has fibbed about his qualifications, the body work that is done is really poor and they never learn from their mistakes time and time again, they dont seem to do the work themselves but rather get someone else in, I could do the same but would feel I had robbed the paying customers that watch these programmes, this is one of my projects, http://www.uberreview.com/2007/04/double-ended-mini-cooper-drive-it-in-both-directions.htm

Did anyone see what happened to Martin Kemps Gangster car, It was flattened at a Monster truck show. That's where Bernie Projects belong. He Is a diaster waiting to happen, I wouldn't let him put a chain on a bicycle never mind fix a car. All the chop shop cars are dangerous. Some never sold at all, the others they pawned off on stars who got rid when the cameras were gone. The Man is a Joke

Another extremely poor resto show with so many examples of innacuracy, farce, lies and poor commedy! Why buy the "suspension cones" (not donuts and probable answer was that they were in such poor condition! they were only fit for the bin!) Mota-lita wheel and trumpets from Palmer Brothers if you did not even use them on the final build? why didnt you put the pinstripe all the way down the side of the car? Where did the side repeaters go? sooooo many questions, not enough time. At least get some kind of accuracy and instil some credibility ??? £5k valuation? Not a chance in heaven! I have now given up on your programme....... its just a joke.

Terrible show, too over blown. It's a shame because I'm a believer in getting wrecks back on the road south a reasonable budget. You don't need to fake the drama, just explain the real technical problems to the audience in a fun way like they do on scrap heap challenge.

If my nine year old didn't think this was entertaining, then there would be no way this would be watched. Dreadful acting every time there is a disastrous crash/drop/fallout. Why is every car given such a high value when nothing about it is original? Why are the cars sprayed in such lurid colours with huge spoilers neddlessly attached? Who would spend thousands on a car without looking underneath it? Who would want to own something that was a pile of rust only weeks ago? This programme is such a disappointment and wasted opportunity - it should be on straight after Roary the Racing Car: Bernie and Mario's Great Adventures.........Only a child would want to own such a car, so that is why they are made to look like something marketed by HotWheels...............

  • steve young

take it for what it is , a bit of fun . it is a car rescue NOT a restoration as mentioned . one thing though bernie , a rotor arm / distributor only goes half the speed of the crank so it would spin up to approx 4000 rpm and not the 8000 rpm you quoted . lmao

The programme isn't a restoration it's a rescue , to get these cars back on the road within 4 weeks , yes bernie is loud and gobby , but I'm an employee at the garage that the programme was made and I can assure you a lot of hard work time and effort were put into them cars. If you have bad views or don't like the programme there's one solution .... Don't watch it ! There may be a lot of people that feel that the programme has made restoring cars look like a joke but they weren't restorations they were rescues!! So as I said don't like it don't watch simple !

OK the classic restoration has been stretched in this show, it has an OCC feel, all a bit mad, yet interesting to watch. As for winning a car, it is worth a shot, there is no point being too snobbish, even if people can do better, I would let them rebuild my Rolls why not its only metal.

Bernie, please tell me you were dumbing down the explanation of how a distributor works for TV, because I can't believe that you think the rotor arm 'contacts' the posts in the distributor cap and that the build up on them is caused by 'static'. I also cant believe that obviously a spoon-full of oil down the bores (for effect) could be mistaken for somebody wrecking the engine? If you really do think this I can't believe the IMI even granted you membership, let alone allowed you to call yourself a 'Master Technician' The program is stage managed rot, and a great chance missed because this could have been great if the producers didn't assume all the viewers were idiots. BTW, I am a proper member of the IRTE and SOE so I do know what I'm talking about.

Many comments unfair, Dont knock Bernie as he has over 50 years technical expertise. he has to work to the direction of the producers renit If you think you can do a better job/have a go. I restored a Mk1 Mr2 on a limited budget with limited equipment and it can be done and appreciate that the program is not like the reborn series on discovery which spent one hundred thousand pounds on a jag restoration Keep on motoring bernie

I'd just like to take the time to say a big thank you to channel 5 for airing Classic Car Rescue. My kids have missed the Chuckle Brothers but think we have found an alternative - the houmour is of the same level and the prop based slapstick is on a par (falling rear axle assembly reversing the car into the engine crane and the baldy shouty one waving the spray gun then realising he has left a rag on the roof - priceless!)

  • Peter Storm

Just endured last nights episode. What an absolute joke. Why didnt you tell the audience that you used two different MGB's? Did you think we would not notice? I feel sorry for anyone who wins any of the cars that you two 'shouty incompetent fools' bodge back to life. This programme would be so much better without the staged accidents and shouty bits/slamming doors (do you take it in turns each week to slam the door?) Why can't we have two experts and a proper restoration?

having done a couple of restorations myself. i found this very lightweight in factual "how to" and presented by drama queens, if you took out all the recaps, tantrums and adverts you would end up with 5 minute show. i rather think that my 5 year old grand daughter could restore a car if she had a team of mechanics and panel beaters to call on and she wouldnt throw as many tantrums!

I didn`t realise this guy was a master technician and a technical engineer? Suddenly I have a rather strong smell in my nose. 3.3 911, Relaint Scimiter plastic crap, etc etc one could go on about the level of his technical disability but it would take far to long. I would seriously consider keeping these "qualifications" quiet because if genuine you making yourself a total laughing stock. Master techncian, really.

Bernie is supposed to be a master technician how come he states the porsche is a 3.3 when everyone knows its a 3.2 he couldn't even wire the lights up some technical engineer. Like so many others on I would not class that as a "RESTORATION" Great presenter in Bernie, however I fully expected HIM to be doing most of the work not get a team of people in to do it. There should have been far more emphasis on the actual work carried out, showing the actual welding and repair of parts of the vehicle. Very little actual work was show. Either this is on the cutting room floor or it was never done in the first place. If you are doing a show about restoring cars please show the restoration instead of before & after missing out the crucial work done. That is after all what any enthusiast would watch this show for. A big disappointment. Maybe for the next series you could restore viewers cars. NOT do an MTV pimp job but take a viewers classic and restore it and return it to the viewer? Now that would make good television.

Terrible presenters, terrible programme. it's a great pity because this could have been very interesting. Neither presenter knew what they were doing. I wouldn't let them work on my old Mondeo, let alone something exotic like and E-Type Jaguar. What were they going to do with that pile of junk they "bought" from the scrapyard? Fit it onto that car? No thanks! That wasn't a restoration, that was a "tart-up"! I'd like to see that same car in 12 months time when all the rust starts coming through again. Would I like to win it? Was really looking forward to this but what a dissapointment. They couldn't have got two worse presenters if they had tried. The 'supposedly' cockney wide boy one was so bad I was waiting for Dick Van Dyke to appear for a rousing rendition of 'Me Ol Bamboo'. A full resto in a month, what a load of crap. No wonder they're giving it away instead of flogging it, it'll be rotten again in a year. And as for making a profit - ha, were all those blokes working for a month for nothing ?? The best bit was when they so obviously reversed the Jag on purpose into the engine for a bit of excitement. Dont think i will be watching the rest of the series. Worst classic car program ever. Shame as it could have been good.

This was not a restoration but merely a refurbishment in the loose term of the word. Having been in the restoration business involving Jaguar's and other vehicles if I purported to have restored this vehicle I would be sued. You also don't change a classic cars original colour and if you do decide to it need to have a total body strip and repaint in order to do it correctly. This was what I call a back street tart up job that one would do jsut to sell to some unsuspecting buyer
