Featuring a multiple Academy Award and Emmy winning star cast including Richard Dreyfuss, Geena Davis, Ellen Burstyn and James Woods, this is a modern-day retelling of Robin Cook's 1977 best-selling novel about a young medical student who discovers that something sinister is going on in her hospital after routine procedures send more than a few seemingly healthy patients into comas on the operating table.

Medical student Susan Wheeler, played by Six Feet Under's Lauren Ambrose, is starting her first year of training at the Peach Tree Memorial Hospital, built by her deceased grandfather. There she meets Chief Surgical Resident, Dr Mark Bellows, who is in a relationship with Head of Psychiatry Dr Agnetta Lindquist

It soon becomes apparent to Susan that something is going wrong at the hospital. An unusually high proportion of operations are resulting in the patient falling into a coma. These patients are being transferred to the mysterious Jefferson Institute, a hospital specifically designed to take care of them run by the sinister Mrs Emerson. Susan starts to ask the sort of questions that others would prefer to remain unanswered, only to find her investigations thwarted at every turn.

Her room mate, who works at the hospital and who helped her gain access to confidential files, is suddenly fired. The hospital board tries to have her expelled from school and she discovers cameras in her house. She is also stalked by Peter Arno, who turns out to be a patient of Dr Lindquist's.

Susan is helped by Dr Bellows and Chief of Surgery Dr Stark. On a rare tour of the Jefferson, she makes a shocking discovery. She takes her evidence to Dr Stark, but he is immediately involved in a serious car accident that leaves him in a coma. With Dr Bellows, Susan also discovers that the Jefferson Institute's payroll includes a number of medical staff who work elsewhere.

Susan now knows too much and has become too dangerous to those involved in whatever is going on at the Institute. It is only after she is abducted, however, that she discovers not only the terrible truth about the Jefferson but also the identity of the mastermind behind the project...
