Series 5 - Episode 4: Bradford

Bradford

Sorry, this episode is not currently available to watch on Demand 5.

Find out why

Dom and Melinda go to Bradford to help a couple who hoped to build an extension which would provide a bedroom to each of their children. Ayaz and Shazia spent £30,000 with a father and son building team to do the job. Instead they were left with a whole host of problems – including an extension without a roof, exposed live electrics and a number of inadequate steel beams. The parents and two daughters are forced to camp in their lounge, while their two sons are stuck sharing a freezing, damp-ridden bedroom.

It's Dominic's mission to find out how a supposedly experienced builder – with three decades of building under his belt – could have made so many basic errors. It's not long before he uncovers a string of unhappy customers, a suspicious lack of paperwork, and a wayward son whose work - and behaviour - on site is a major cause for concern.

Meanwhile, Melinda's got her hands full with the massive building project. Hampered by the problems she uncovers, Melinda appeals to the local community to help the family. She's inundated with offers – including one from the local rugby league team.

When Dom finally catches up with the builder, he finds a man in denial about both his building work and the actions of his son.

I have worked in construction for alot of years now and £30k does not buy you an extension of that size. This clearly does not excuse what has happened in this case but it should be seen as a lesson to people that they must do their homework! Get several quotes. An extension of that size should be under the supervision of an architect and an engineer..

Mel & Dom do a fantastic job on these shows, felt for the family left in such a mess by the builders although could appreciate the comment about the family always asking for extras etc, as i worked decorating for an asian family and it honestly felt i was working on the Forth Bridge the amount of "can u do this","can u do that" which was voiced, which i did more fool me as was not paid, paid me some and was told "all we can afford",can laugh about it now but not funny at the time,so as prev stated in comments above 2 sides to every story, and basically as no witnesses to actual events is one word against another

Some of Dom's comments are prejudiced/sterotypical. Ian looks like a nice man but his son is more guns and roses!!!That is as offensive as one saying the wife in the peogramme is an opressed, dominated woman cos of the typical/traditionsl way she is dressed!!!Watch your comments please, channel 5!!!

The Khans probably do feel very down as it is more than a few individuals...but if they are honest and were genuinely desperate for the help of the community and the thousands spent on them, then they have nothing to be ashamed of.We all have a duty to help the needy.

Sorry, but to the people below calling the builder a cowboy: you need to get a grip. This show, and many others, only show the story from the customers view. How do you know the family refused to pay him what he already done. Builders don't have a unlimited amount of funds to keep them going. If they don't get paid, they could lose everything (house, car, trade etc). If the builder in this show was being messed around (which I strongly suspect to be the case) why should he continue the job out of his own pocket? Also, I like how Dom thinks he's in the right to attack the builder because he's heard the customers side first. Channel 5 might want to check there own builders on the show while there at it. I lost count of how many things they did wrong on camera - including the building inspector who measured the step to the ceiling in the complete wrong place. How about a show where people follow builders around and watch how much they get ripped off!

wow!its amazing as to how jealous individuals can become when they see a genuinely devestated and wronged family being helped.Ian is definately in the top 5 for cowboy builders and anyone who disputes this needs to wake up and realise that obviously Ian is going to come up with excuses and will surely try to defend himself, even dom thinks hes deluded.

so, the builder is blamed for the mess but it turns out the Khans cant be bothered to hire a skip, the electrics are dangerous but turns out they were nothing to do with the builders, the builders were sacked but it turns out they left due to intimidation and agression..and Geoff has provided the nail inthe coffin..the programme is leveling charges against Ian about things that are not even against buildingregulations !!

  • Geoff

Further to my last comment regarding the head height at the top of the stairs, they measure the height from the wrong place. It should be measured from the pitchline of the stairs, not the going of the last step. Do the advisors on this programme know nothing. Anybody who knows anything about building regulations should know a simple fact like that. Makes me wonder how much Melissas builder actually knows himslf. It also looks bad on the Building Inspector who alledgedly inspected the job.

Good point Tanner- Ian came across as dignified and without anything to hide. The lack of paper work also allows cowboy clients to take advantage of builders......in short no contract means neither party has any real grounds to plead a case-builders or clients.

It was interesting to see that out of the builders seen on all the series, Ian was by far one of the more courteous and more dignified, credit to him for having the chops for going out there and explaining his case. This in turn probably let his arguments sink in a bit more. What I see is a guy whose slowed down in his older age, and let a problematic son take the reigns. However as a builder one thing you should NOT do is "not find the time to make contracts" Sorry but the negative attention is wholly deserved if you flaunt even the most basic paperwork. Builders may think they're a way for customers to gain control, but they are the sole tool for covering your backs in case things turn sour. Payment and schedule agreements provide far more evidence than word of mouth can.

He also raised some significant points about the Khans conduct and integrity. What was all the rubbish regarding the 2 metres headroom to the stairs on this weeks episode. Building regulations clearly state that on a sloping ceiling, you can have 1.8 metres at one end as long as the headroom to the centre line is a min 1.9 metres.

Dave:How can you misjudge such an ovious issue. It is about morality/values/principles. If you promise somebody something, you should deliver- especially if the premise of your whole programme is helping those who are let down by broken promises. The selfish people are the cowboy builders programme who were happy to beg for help to make their programme but then forget their promises once they had met their objectives.Even channel 5 are not motivated by goodness, they make the family plead their desperation, expose their dire predicament, shed crocodile tears and then, only then do they help them.

  • Steph

    Steph

Dave, how long have you been working for channel 5? You are clearly missing the point, its not the lack of advertising which is wrong, it is the broken promise about the advertising. These guys were good enough to keep to their word and fit the carpets for free, Ch5 should have been good enough to keep their end of the bargain. Everyone has to make a living and these guys cancelled jobs to help out so its a reasonable request for some advertising to generate work. Everyone has to put food on the table.

"Meanwhile, Melinda's got her hands full with the massive building project. Hampered by the problems she uncovers, Melinda appeals to the local community to help the family. She's inundated with offers – including one from the local rugby league team." And in the local Bradford paper it states: "TV personality Melinda Messenger was in Bradford today righting the wrongs of a rogue builder for a new series of Cowboy Builders. The presenter and former model is pictured meeting Bradford Bulls players in a bid to persuade them to provide the muscle to help a construction project for someone who had been let down. The show tracks down cowboy builders who cause devastation and dismay and the show’s team fix up ruined houses and stand up for the consumer." Doesn't add up for me. http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/8955696.Melinda_Messenger_visits_Bradford_for_TV_s_Cowboy_Builders/?ref=rss&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

Its about time we had some people with a clue on these threads, how people can't see that the builders are not always wrong is beyond me. Cowboy Clients is a great idea. Also, Mel and Dom aren't doing a great job, they are just faces, do you honestly think they would recognise anyone who has been on the show (client or builder) if they seen them in the street. They are doing it purely for the big fat cheque they get for it. In fact, I seem to remember an episode where the builder in question had actually worked on several builds with melinda and her property developing team. She said she had never had any problems before with him. Could it not be possible that maybe some of the builders have just made some mistakes in business rather than ripping people off or being cowboys?

Lewis and Jenny.Thankyou. Finally- honest ,intelligent debate after much lunatic rantings! There are always two sides to a story and I think sometimes the builders are the true victims- of unreasonable expectations, lack of payment, intimidatory tactics. Lewis Brand, there are lots of 'Cowboy Clients', they think the tradesmen are slaves, should work for free. For the rock bottom prices they agreed to pay, they expect royal services, expecting a hell of demolishing work done, and still living on site normally. People are working in the building industry are so unfairly treated...

  • Lewis Brand

I really like this program, and admire the way Don and co. go after these bad boys of the building industry. The problem , though I have is in some of the lack of knowledge that the team's resident 'expert' builder seems to have. Their is no requirement, for instance, to have a n 'air gap' beneath a flat roof with the correct breathable vapour barrier installed: this is called a warm roof ( rather than a cold roof ) installation. You can't blame a builder, for example for drainage from a large sloping field adjacent ( but not owned by)being inadequate, and thus causing flooding damage to the building work the builder undertook. I wish Don and co. would do a new series entitled 'Cowboy Clients'....believe me there are plenty out there too!

the program hasnt even been broadcasted yet on to live t.v. so how can you judge they are scammers and fraudsters? if the couple had any criminal records then im pretty sure channel 5 woudlnt have chose 'scammers and fraudsters with criminal records', so think before you write any judgmental comments. regarding paul's comment, for starters the program hasnt even been on yet so how can you call the family rough? ive seen the trailer for this episode and i think the family deserved to have channel 5's cowboy builders to come in and fix their house that was left in such a bad/dangerous state as seeing from the TINY trailer!
