No mention of the fact that the shots of the bi-plane (were in fact a large scale model to 47.5% scale of the Bristol Bulldog model flown by IAN TURNEY –WHITE from Hull in east yorkshire and is a testament to his building skills. Ian is a member of the Large Model Association A great piece of flying pity there was not more.!! better than cgi every time.

Another good documentary ruined yet again by overblown drumming and movie-level background music. What IS it with you documentary makers that you have to ruin everything with this constant drumming and racket? It distracts from the narration, spoils the whole programme and I won't be watching any further episodes. Just can't sit through so much distracting noise.

I recall seeing the programme regarding DB being shot down by one of his own. From what i recall it was rather conclusive with the 'guilty' party being named. However i guess we will never know for sure. What cannot be disputed is DB's undoubted bravery.

  • Thornyeagle

    Thornyeagle

Thank you Richard Smith. You have proved my point that DB was in fact shot down by one of his own flights pilots. So I was NOT the ONLY one to see that documentary. For In that documentary, they even named the pilot who was possibly responsible for such "superb" shooting. The Germans gave credit to one of their own, Adolf Galland. Whilst WE on the other hand gave the same acknowledgement for the sake of moral. How would it look if it was disclosed that one of DB's own pilots shot down the most egomatic fighter pilot at that time? Not good that's for sure. So it must have been easier to blame the Germans. As they WERE the bad guys at that time were they not? So I am of the opinion that that is how Channel 5 possibly intended it to be. By just simply passing over what was generally believed to be the fact on that fateful August day in 1941 over France. .

Among the inaccuracies was the opening sequence in which Bader has to abandon his aircraft. I don't know about him being 'shot down' by one of his own pilots, but as I understand it, the tail of his aircraft was severed and that's what brought him down. Also the mission to deliver another artificial leg to him in captivity was always understood to have had no special privileges from the Germans. The British insisted it would be sent as part of a normal operation.

The programme is repeated 7pm Tues 25th. Yes, there were some inaccuracies but that's to be expected with rare ultra-costly flying examples that have survived. The CGI Spitfires were modelled on the Mk IX with the Me109 G (Dand E versions in 1940), Heinkel IIIs and JU88s. The real-time Spitfire is the OFMCs Mk IXc MH434 ZD-B; the Hawker Hurricane is the Mk I R4118 UP-W of Hawker Restorations, both of Duxford. The Me109s in the film the 'Battle of Britain' were Spanish Air Force Me109 Hispano Bouchons with the Merlin powerplant (Me109 airframes were given to Spain by the Luftwaffe after the war). The original Me109s were fuel injected thus eliminating fuel cut-off during inverted flight but the Spitfire could out-turn the 109 in a dive. The Hurricanes could sustain more damage than the Spit, a more stable gun platform and shot down more enemy aircraft. The Spitfire is a pleasure to fly and a remarkable aeroplane of its time. Douglas Bader was assigned to 19 Sqn Spitfires Feb 1940 at Duxford; Flight Lt of 222 Sqn Spitfires May 1940 Duxford; Sqn Ldr 242 Sqn Hurricanes June 1940 Coltishall; Wing Ldr 145, 610 & 616 Sqns Spitfires Mar 1941 Tangmere until Aug 1941 Spitfire Mk Vb D-B when he was shot down over France. Taken to St. Omer Hospital from where he escaped. Apart from errors the story of Bader is remarkable and at the time following Dunkirk, Britain needed a moral boost and Bader was the man to do it. Forget the errors and see the man who overcame disability and went on to fight in the air and on the ground anyway he could as a prisoner of war.

Damn sky box didnt record properly so missed it Read comment on hurricane spitfire the spit was superior in design to the hurricane but due to materials the hurricane was quicker and easier to maintain and repair the rolls merlin superb power plant but had a problem that the german daimler didnt the daimler had a fuel pump unlike the merlins gravity flow meaning during high g and inverted flight the engine would lose power and cut out where the daimler having fuel pump feed constant fuel pressure meaning it doesnt suffer these problems

There were more Hurricanes than Spitfires, but that doesn't alter the fact the Spitfire was the superior machine.

I fully enjoyed the documentary on the legless wonder. Our Douglas Bader. There WILL always be errors in any documentary. No matter how hard one trys NOT to make them. The historical facts were there to be seen to the best that could be displayed. However ladies & gents. There has been some doubt for many years as to WHO actually shot down DB in 1941 over the skies of France. Was it really an ME109 or one of his own flight? Simply because at that time the wings of the ME109 were no longer "squared" at the tips, but rounded. Whereas from certain angles the Spitfire and the ME109 were, in a fighter pilots limited micro seconds time span of decision, very, very similar. Plus mistakes can/were made. Therefore Adolf Galland was given the honour of the shooting DB down, but that was mainly for prestige and a possible Nazi PR cull. Either way who can deny that this new documentary is a winner......including errors. As it is very watchable and very entertaining all the same. Sorry if anyone disagrees but....... hay ho that's life you know.

Some very unrealistic shots of him in the aircraft cockpit flying with what appeared to be the same make-up each time. The reference to the Spitfire being so much superior to the Hurricane was annoying as history tells me it was the Hurricane that played the greatest part?

Not a bad documentry, but a few mistakes, which the producers missed in final editing and should have been picked up having done their research. Tom Neil flew Hurricanes not Spitfires during the battle, Tony Pickering did not fly with Bader, he was in 501 Squadron based in Kent. Bader was a flight Lieutenant with 222 Squadron flying Spitfies during Dunkirk when he scored his first enemy aircraft destroyed. Unusual, that no mention about the new research that came to light last year that Bader was probably shot down by one of his own squadron on his last flight and not by a German aircraft?

Apart from the obvious visual inaccuracies-an excellent drama documentary. As Lord Ashcroft has more than likely sourced his book from earlier books written by Battle of Britain pilots and historians there wasn't anything new being presented here about Douglas Bader. Most of Lord Ashcroft quotes are from Paul Brickhill's 'Reach for the Sky'! During Battle of Britain week this documentary is still an excellent tribute to 'The Few'.

to Graham Summers, it appears that you are the one with their facts inaccurate. The squdron that he commanded was 242 squdron and not 222.. He initially flew the Hurricane with the lettering LED on the side and it was only later that he flew the Spitfire with the letting DB on the side so it does appear that you owe the historians an apology! Great programme though.

Why did the programme talk about Bader's early career with 19 Sqn when it was 222 Sqn, and why did ot show shots of Hurricanes over Dunkirk, when he was in fact flying Spitfires. They had historians dealing with this show, but as usual they were not aviation historians. Another balls up!

  • Bob Emmanuel

A good account but there are some critisms:- If I was a Canadian pilot of 242 squadron, I would take great exception to being called a ragtag group of pilots, having fought in France, heavily engaged and outnumbered, and without the benefit of ground control; and loosing a large number of my mates. They managed to return to the UK but without their squadron spares or their personal possessions. But Bader got them all these requirements which boosted their morale no end. That is what is said to have happened. The presenting historian doesn't explain the differences between an attack by "the big wing" (they take a while to get off the ground and form up and they arrive after the party is over) and an individual squadron.

Although a condensed verson this episode is an excellent portrayal of Douglas Bader. Actor Mark Stanley has obviously studied Bader intensly as he imitates Bader's unique method of swinging his right leg up and into the cockpit. If photographs and film are studied Bader entering the cockpit you will see the same moves. The blend of archive, CGI, 'Battle of Britain' film footage and live action aerial sequences are superb. Although many have told Bader's story, channel 5 have excelled this time.
