Horsemeat & Other Food Shockers

Sorry, this episode is not currently available to watch on Demand 5.

Find out why

Industry experts and food researchers explain that things aren’t always as straightforward as they might appear – whether it’s healthy ranges that aren’t that healthy, or foodstuffs whose ingredients aren’t quite what they say on the tin. If you are what you eat, then these days it’s essential to know what’s in your food in the first place.

We’ll reveal exactly what goes into bargain bangers, the potential dangers from eating organic chicken, and why a visit to the dentist might be in order if you overindulge in getting your 5-a-day. But it’s not all bad news ... alongside the possible dietary side-effects of vomiting and diarrhoea, bacterial infection and increased risk of brittle bones that come from some of our favourite grub, it turns out that tomato ketchup might actually be quite good for you.

I've now tried to view this in 3 different browsers, with cookies enabled and it still doesn't play - Channel 5, sort this out! Look at iPlayer as an example - that works virtually flawlessly cross platform. cross browser so it's not an impossible task!

I agree with what many have already pointed out. Some rather important facts were trivualised and made fun of. If people want to eat meat then I think Channel's should seriously research the pain and suffering of these poor defenseless animals go through in slaughter houses. And the homones they are pumped with throughout their short pitiful lives. Ninety nine percent of people either haven't got a clue or are in denial, because its easier. There is e-mail above from Jan Hall about a mother and foal being killed with a sledge hammer as others watch. This is the sort of thing people need to be made aware of!!! The TRUTH. And the cowards behind these killings brought to justice.

I've just been told about this programme (5th May 2013) and I haven't even bothered to watch half of it. It's so flippant and completely surreal. And the dentist who said that bottled water caused tooth decay is off his rocket. At least bottled water doesn't contain heavy metals and arsenic in the same way that West Midlands tap water does when the fluoridating acid is added. This programme is journalism at its worst. Trivialising important issues is a low mean trick just to attract those who cannot think for themselves

I am not screamish about horse meat in our food which is obviously not supposed to be there, for me the fact that these horses are not slaughtered humanely and I have seen footage of a mare and foal hit in the head with sledge hammers to kill them which was most distressing and the sight has never left my mind wathching the poor foal looking on as her mother was felled to the ground in front of her, whsilt all around them were other horses of various breeds awaiting the same fate all within sight of each other, which I believe is in contravention of slaughter rules. who is making money from all this heart ache and abuse? when we sell our horses and ponies on we expect them to receive at least a humane end. i for one hope someone in the government looks into this quite sharply and stops this inhumane practice.

Can everyone shut up about the advertisements? You're all watching this program for free and its obviously not free to put online is it? They have to get the money to fund the website from somewhere so be thankful that is not from you.

How can the average consumer make intelligent choices when shopping when, for instance, bread containing dead baby mice is not labelled as such? It is about time that supermarkets were forced to accurately and comprehensibly describe all their products eg. 'SuperValue' tomatoes should be labelled as 'Gritty, mushy fruit substitute in a glaringly red skin'.

The only way to eat healthy is to make your own food, from scratch.... from fresh veggies, pulses and grain. In other words be a 'veganist'! Don't make your stomach a graveyard for dead abused animals!... Look out for fluoride and what it does to your teeth! Plenty of info on you tube. Stop being puppets and manipulated by the commercial money making frauds out there!

Even if it did have anything relevant to say why have the disco music overwhelming it, or maybe that was the reason. These program's must be written by adolescents for adolescents.

fluoride is toxic to your body. Hitler first used it to dumb down the poor folks who went in to the gas chambers. we should not be drinking it. there is no evidence that its good for teeth, it actually can harm teeth in the form of fluorosis. google is and read!. what utter rubbish this program is.

Concerning bottled water. Please Channel 5 research fluoride. www.fluoridealert.org. We do not want drugs, medication. additives in water that should be water as pure as possible. Fluoride is not a nutrient. If you do want it for your teeth (I don't) - it is to be used topically not swallowed. AND fluoridation , adding fluoride to a water supply has scientifically been proven harmful to the body and environement over these past 60 years. The evidence keeps mounting up. Fortunately only 10% of England has fluoridation but that is 10% too much. Please see the research Channel 5 and help us.

Germs are good for you and there is plenty of evidence to suggest that fluoride is bad for you, could have mentioned such nasties as aspartame yet they take other American foods that we probably dont find in local supermarkets and warn us about them instead

Wow thank you! I too thought the documentary was interesting but the woman narrating was incredibly annoying, trying to be funny when she really wasn't. It would've been an alright documentary with a better narrator.

@ Henry Deacon. Using bull's blood in wine is something that has been done since wine was made. In Spain, 'sangre' means blood, hence the name Sangria since it contained blood in the wine.
