I was disturbed by Gabby's comments in relation to Disability and becoming a wheelchair user!! The idea that becoming a wheelchair user and disabled is devastating is a severe over simplification! Devastating is the Ethnic Cleansing in Darfur, or the concentration and death camps during WWII, "The Final Solution" was devastating! Becoming a wheelchair user is a life changing situation but devastating will cause severe discomfort for disabled people everywhere! Equally, to suggest that it is extremely brave to recover from a disability and to be able to walk again suggests that remaining a wheelchair user or disabled is due to a lack of bravery! I am not suggesting that Gabby actually believes this but I do suggest that language in describing such issues should be carefully chosen! As a wheelchair user and being disabled I do not consider myself any braver than anybody else, nor am I devastated at my situation! I would love to be able to get up and go for a run but it is not the end of he world that I cannot. I am suggesting that care should be taken when choosing language because it can cause intense hurt if somebody mis-speaks!
