PART ONE – MARTIN LEWIS – ALWAYS ON THE MONEY

Money maestro, Martin Lewis on the myths and misunderstandings of further education finance to uncover the true cost of going to university. STUDENT FINANCE: THE FACTS
The vast majority of people in the UK are heavily in debt with the populations credit card bill adding up to a huge fifty eight and a half billion pounds and the average household will be in almost eighty thousand pounds worth of debt by 2015. One of the major financial worries concerning families today is Student Finance and helping future students and parents to know about the true cost of a university education under the 2012 system. Thankfully, Martin Lewis is here to give us all some advice that you won’t have to fork out for.

STORY 1: UNIVERSITIES MAY 'BUY' TOP A-LEVEL STUDENTS
Middle-ranking universities may offer scholarships to lure AAB-grade students or higher away from elite universities. The highest performing A-level candidates could be tempted with cut-price deals on tuition fees from next year, as some English universities face increased pressure to maintain student numbers.

STORY 2: UK PUBLIC SECTOR DEBT ESTIMATED AT £135,000 PER HOUSEHOLD
Brokers have put the public sector debt at around £900billion. Close to 3.6trillion when the effects of bailing out the banks, public sector pension commitments and Private Finance Initiatives contracts are included. That represents £135,000 debt for every household. If you include private debts such as mortgages the sum rises to £5trillion.

STORY 3: Obama announces US deficit deal between party leaders
What impact will the US crisis have on the UK economy? US President Barack Obama says Republican and Democratic leaders have reached an agreement on raising the US debt limit and avoiding default.
He said the deal would cut $1tn of spending over 10 years, and set up a committee to report by November on a proposal to further reduce the deficit. But Congress still has to approve the deal, and with votes in both houses expected on Monday.

STORY 4: DEBT BUSTING!
Debt experts say the number of women falling into debt has risen in the past decade, in many cases due to overspending in attempts to emulate celebrities. Women now make up 40% of all people declared bankrupt compared with 29% in 2000, according to the Government-run Insolvency Service.
