About the show
Madventures is on a quest to explore the most insane destinations in the world!
Riku Rantala and Tunna Milonoff are two (somewhat) fearless Finns who cross the globe carrying nothing but backpacks and cameras – from the deserts of the Middle East to the Papuan jungles, from the metropolises of modern Japan to the villages of the primitive Amazon basin.
Riku (the one with the mike) and Tunna (the one behind the camera) are on a global odyssey to learn about the most bizarre traditions on earth and to uncover the secrets this planet holds, capturing the spirit of the destination in places that haven’t seen a camcorder before. This is not necessarily the deepest, darkest jungle, but ghettoes, parties and neighbourhoods where outsiders are rarely allowed. Madventures is able to do this because the show is shot with very sparse equipment, the two hosts being the only crew on the road.
Travel plans, cultural introductions and Mad Cook, the popular insert where exotic dishes are sampled, are recurring elements of the show.
One goal of Madventures is to question western thinking, if only because it is the only mindset familiar enough for the hosts – or the viewers – to question. Shedding the skin of one’s cultural background even for a moment is necessary, if you want to understand another culture beyond mere surface-scratch.
Throwing oneself into the fire from the frying pan is what is expected of Madventures; be it implanting a diamond inside one’s skin the old Burmese way; flogging one’s back to bloody pulp as an act of Catholic penance in the Philippines; or jumping from the roof of the uncompleted high-rise of the new and more extreme Russia, to name but a few.
Explorers used to be scientists; today, the world is open to all of us. Even though the blank spots on the map are getting more rare by the month, personal discovery is something each one of us can find on our journeys. Madventures is a show about modern nomads. It’s just the two of them, Riku and Tunna, lifelong travellers to the strangest destinations of the world.
No crew, no security, no limits. This is Madventures.
