What rubbish - the Irish bodies are much earlier than any vampire scare in Europe, hence the documentary only being able to quote/re-enact irrelevant later cases of 'vampire hysteria'! And here comes Dracula - why not Lefanu's Carmilla?? Sensationalist rubbish!

Chris Read was interviewed on rte 1 radio in Ireland today, as he said himself said that he did not believe that the two irish burials were vampires, the documentary was about the fact that these much older devient burials had been treated in a similar way to "vampires" in the middle ages.... and that perhaps the irish burials were feared as revenants.... and that the concept of this may be older than before thought!! I think the film makers sensationalised things a bit from what its seems but this is often what happens when programmes are aimed a t the general public... the guy even said in the radio interview that he wasnt exactly thrilled about the title of the show, but guessed it was to "draw in the punters"!!

Hi Pete, the narrator sounds like Ian McShane who used to play Lovejoy on TV. I hope that helps.

More likely the Irish burials were people that had stones placed in the mouths as a punishment for something they had said, Vampires Rubbish

lol the romanian peasant guy that talks in romanian in the last few mins of the show says 1 thing and this guys translate an entirely other thing...since when trying to explain that one man says the truth (even though his reasons were that he went to and i quote " welders school and radio and TV repairing school" and by that he is a believable person(cause he got schooled)so he must be believed) and telling the ppl that are in charge with translating what he said to translate what he said to the ppl means God defend us, if u have old parents you better ionsert a knitting needle into the heartto make sure they will never turn into a moroi otherwise they will come and get you"?

It wasn't exactly about bloodsucking vampires as we think of them, but it was about the undead...I found it very interesting....and something different from the usual history programmes.

this video is ok, but it wasn't what i expected at all. I have visited Whitby Abbey, where dracula is from and it is nothing like what the video showed, it is not scary at all.

@Kev C They are not saying vampires are real but in those days there was vampire hysteria so the people who buried the bodies might have thought they were and when there was very limited knowledge of medicine it is perfectally acceptable to presume they were dealing with vampires. That what archeology partly is presuming they have every right to presume that this person was believed to be a vampire because those were just some rituals for stopping a vampire.

Vampires? I doubt it. Revenants? Maybe. Ireland was not only the stronghold of the Church, but also the stronghold of the Celtic tradition. To bind, and to stop the mouths, is to prevent movement, to prevent words from being spoken. A worker of magic is believed to act by means of words and actions. A worker of dark magic could also be linked to the undead. Alternatively The church disapproves of cults nowadays, but nowadays laws forbid such harsh punishment. Yet now, as back then, there is an effort to separate the false prophet from the followers.
