Series 2012 - The Great Falklands Gamble: Revealed

The Great Falklands War Gamble: Revealed

Sorry, this episode is no longer available to watch on Demand 5.

Find out why

On April 2nd 1982 Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands, in the South Atlantic, 8,000 miles from the UK. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher decided to send a naval taskforce to liberate the islands. In this programme, senior officers who served in the campaign, among them Major-General Julian Thompson, reveal how appalling weather, overstretched British air defences, poor communications and even incompetence sometimes stacked the odds heavily against the British.

Veterans of some of the bloodiest battles talk us through the fighting. Their personal accounts reveal how professionalism and sheer courage overcame these problems.

The film reveals chilling parallels with current government budget cuts. In 1982, Defence Minister John Nott was on the brink of scrapping Britain’s amphibious warfare capabilities. If the Argentinians had invaded just eight weeks later, the ships and equipment needed for the operation would already have been decommissioned.

There are also shocking accounts of British warships destroyed by Argentinian bombs, men burnt alive, bombs crashing through the decks of ships, night attacks up mountainous slopes and merciless hand-to-hand fighting, all made worse by unsuitable equipment and shortages of helicopters.

By explaining the hair-raising realities of individual battles, this programme sheds new light on a decisive and historic British victory.

Hermes Birkin For Sale | Elegant Dress Styles For Prom Formal Events A woman's handbag is one of her most treasured possessions. ockabillyideally describes the fusion of country and rock and roll music, which hermes bracelets was also popularly termed illbilly, during the 1950s. These dresses will be shipped to your door. A lipstick stun gun is admired for its incredibly small size and yet astonishing power. It was first introduced in the 1930s. However, at that time, it was cheap kind of stuff that was meant to be worn on special occasions and that too hermes birkin only a few number of times. You need to spend a bit if you want to look gorgeous on a special occasion. Some of the things that you can carry along are umbrellas, parasols, hand fans, swords, handbags, canes, etc. The business was started by a company with a retail store for Mountain climbers. There is availability of these jackets for both women and hermes birkin for sale men. Surprisingly, the hermes victoria creator of Mo t Hennessy Louis Vuitton happens to also be the same owner of Sephora cosmetics. So essentially, these are the main reasons hermes birkin for sale why every woman happens to always buy Sephora cosmetics. Even the type of leather which they are made out of is equally impressive as well with goatskin and calfskin also purchasable. This is why both large and small handbags are available. When it is considered that we choose to ask for affordable sums of money at all times, buying numerous clutch bags is possible because your means won't ever be surpassed. In the United States and Canada, there are hermes sac birkin over 280 Sephora stores and over 270 Sephora inside JCPenney stores. In summary, there are three kinds of fashionable styles for women to make a decision when they are confused about the styles of their prom gowns 2012. Little black dresses, flirted evening gowns, homecoming gowns and cute cocktail dresses with one shoulder style will be amazing. One shoulder gowns for women are hot in some fashion show or some hot red carpets.

Does anyone really think the UK would have lost to Argentina? For one thing, I believe the UK military has nukes, not to mention much better funding and equipment - it wasn't like this was the US in Vietnam where much of the local population was hostile & prolonged, demoralizing guerrilla warfare was likely. I was warming to this show, but between this and the fictional war between the US and the UK, I've concluded its little better than a historical Murdoch owned tabloid and about as accurate.

please is not a very democratic measure to block this video to argentine ips. In my opinion, "we almost lost the falklands/malvinas war" is a bloody shit. why? because argentina didnt have war experience, a central command (we fought 3 wars against you, one for each force) logistic madness and improvisation. And the most saddly we didnt deploy our best troops, 90 % of recruits, an incomplete subtropical battalion (Nº 3 of corrientes province) and general menendez who in a normal country we will be sentenced to dead for incompetence and a pathetic surrender. Maybe this video is to create fear in the uk people, and to justify more military budget. The task force made mitakes in war? yes many of them, lost ships and put in extreme danger most of their fleet (fortunately our bombs are too old and difficult to calibrate) attacks darwin more for politican reasons (fighting against our best troops in the islands) and all the campaing was in the extreme of our logistic capacity in that time. But we never close to win, cant destroy the fleet (by a little perhaps) we have no war plan, no war commander (menendez have no guts to support darwin at any cost, and made a counter attack at the same time). our fleet well i think they could do more, maybe not in group movements but deploying too many civilians ships to sature the radars will can be force the blockade whit a single frigate at full speed. there are many suppositions, the facts are in history books. to said a final word: peace. and i want to see the video, please remember press freedom!

Ludlow and Martin: first of all, I have nothing against islanders or british people in general. But self determination of people is an euphemism to hide the opposite your government did in the past. Please check what happend with Diego Garcia - Chagos Islands: the british expelled in fact 2000 inhabitants, seeding terror among them by cutting off food and medicines and "killing one thousand dogs" in a kind of middle age inquisitional action (killing dogs or dolphins is allways bad, you know). Fortunately women were not burn out accused of wichery. Were those people rights and willingness respected? Was democracy respected in Britain by using another trick as the Queen signed a statement with no aproval or even giving notice to the british parliament? And all this to serve the interests of your big boy son you breed to protect what remanins of the British Empire, as it grew old and a little weaker; the US needed a base in the Indian Ocean to cover Asia during the cold war. And Ludlow (sorry if was someone else), why do you claim the arg. government to give back the land to original american inhabitants? They didn't made our Nation, we come from the ships actually during and after the spanish, but they, the original inhabitants, are recognised in our Constitution and are not considered disposable like british government treated people (real facts, no fiction or hipothetical assumptions) in Diego Garcia in the 1960's. Hard to believe that an ethnic cleansing was requested by the yanks before settling the base. Or the treatment given to australian original inhabitants babys during britsh colonization, being taken away from their families if they were "white enough skin" to be placed in a decent house of white people. But what Mr. Cameron cannot dare to call my country is Colonial: we never had a single acre of land outside our own territory, but you did as an overseas empire. May be is a mirror declaration. he wants to see in others what he actually see inside. Please check also what Samuel Johnsosn said about the islands back in 1771 and the Nootka Sound deal between Britain and Spain in 1790. Finnaly, there wew 18 spanish governors between 1767 and 1811, and then a formal setling in 1821 by Comander David Jewett (US born), sent by the United Provinces government to stop sea lions and whales depredation, and then two succesive governors sent by the government of the Provincias Unidas since 1823. This was published by the spanish and british media in 1821, with approval from the british counselor/ambassador in Buenos Aires. There were citizens from the United Provinces in the islands by 1833, a population of several dozens, including Vernet´s governor daughter, whose right to self determination were not considered or asked if they wanted to keep belonging to their country. Finally they were sent out by force. So, there are no good and bad guys in this story, only interests (not wishes) from both sides, and the way to arrive to an agreement is to talk about it, not to deny the existence of the problem behind a false argument as self determination. We, the argentineans consider the islanders as squots, and we have been claiming for more than a century, so our request is for territory: the house ownership, or a room of it, belonging to us before you decided to take it by force. Property, or better said sovereignity over the territory, came in first place. Otherwise, tell me hoy to sustain the fact that any squot can be as legal as the original owner of a house. London would be in trouble then. Of course the people can decide to keep living there and following their costumes and culture, this country was made of inmigrants, including a large brithish, scotish, welsh and irish comunities, several of them having double nationality due to existing agreement between governments. Both sides should try to see the whole movie, not only a picture.

I would like to point out that combatants on both sides fought bravely during this conflict; however, one correction, the Argentine Air Force did not "kick RN and RAF pilot ass" they actually respected the pilots from the carriers in their Harriers. In fact the Argintine Air Force dubbed the Harrier the "Black Death" because it was so nimble and manouverable in the air to air role. Personally its time the Argentine government realised the people of the Falklnds wish to remain "BRITISH". But like everything political in Argentina, when thiings are bad in Government the politicians stir up the Falklands question, yes thats "Falklands" not Mal Vinas" to detract attention away from the issues affecting the people who are worse off through poor policy making.

to Nicolas I, Argentine personal losses: - 649 killed, 1,068 wounded, 11,313 TAKEN PRISONER. British losses 258, killed, 775 wounded, 115 taken prisoner. Thats 90x the number of argie military personal taken prisoner than british. Argie Aircraft losses:- 35 fighters, 25 helicopters, 2 bombers, 4 transports, 25 COIN aircraft, 9 armed trainers. British losses: - 24 helicopters, 10 fighters. That means the RAF fighters, shot down the arige airforce at a rate of more than 3 to 1. Argentina also loss ALL military equipment deployed to the falklands, thousands of rifles, fighting vehicles , artillery all fell into British hands. Britain lost 2 destroyers and 2 frigates to french weapons, but after the sinking of the argie cruiser and submarine the argie navy was to scared to come out of port and face the royal navy.

Here's a hypothetical question: who owns a new volcanic island which just appears in 'international waters', in the Pacific? Let's suppose an Argentinian family decides to eke out a living on its barren slopes, perhaps by setting up some sort of hydroponic farming. These people are then threatened by nearby Tongans, who see that the Argentinians are becoming successful. They want to claim it for themselves, and send an army to take the island by force. Would not Argentina be right to support their own countrymen, and send forces to take the island back? The same principle applies to the Falklands: the people struggling to live there gained ownership by crofting and fishing: they have squatters' rights! Argentina only really became interested when they greedily thought there might be mineral, gas or oil reserves in the area. Soldiers, of any flag or country, bravely do what they are told by politicians; and good politicians do what they think their electors or subjects want them to do. Sadly, some politicians are not good; and they send soldiers to fight in unjust situations. In every war, many bad decisions are made by those in command on both sides. We cannot know whether some soldiers may have survived the whole period of a conflict; if those particular decisions had been made differently. Maybe they might; and maybe not. What will almost always ensue, is that one side will appear victorious. But victories can be hollow if the factions fail to coexist harmoniously afterwards. Sabre rattling by either side will only prolong the problem; and I'm sick of it. Let's leave the brave and hard working islanders in peace, please.

Geographically it makes no sense for the UK to claim the Falklands/Malvinas as their territory. However, it is the peoples of the Falklands/Malvinas right to decide on this issue and they have decided to be part of the UK. Should Argentina develop as a nation to a stage that the Falklands/Malvinas inhabitants desire more to be Argentinian than British then so be it. But until then it is British.

Nicholas 1 - you claim that Argentina shot down 3 RAF Chinooks and yet you didn't. They were sunk with the Atlantic Conveyor. No RAF Chinooks were shot down. In fact the only Chinook was shot down was Argentinian. I know this as my Father flew the surviving Chinook for most of the war and his ground crew had to scavenge spare parts from the wreckage of it! So your huge post is nullified by a small error on your behalf. Sorry.

Without getting into a political issue of who's islands they are, the program pointed out how we nearly lost the war. The main point being we didn't. It focused on lies told by our goverment, poor kit, poor training, poor logistics, poor military strategy but this can be said of many wars and conflicts right from an age when we threw rocks at each other. The thing that helped the british win this was the Guts, Determination and Bravery of the British soldier. As for the men that lost their lives and those that have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan people say they died for nothing, I don't believe so. They died doing what they wanted to do and volunteered to do..Be A British Soldier, but whether they were sent on a lost cause is a different matter. R.I.P. The Soldiers lost on both sides

The invasion of Argentine army to Falkland Islands was a sum of tactical and political errors , of an anti-popular government in an effort to get public sympathy. In fact, England ever won a war without U.S. help. The american aid by satellite information, the experience and determination of british, and the old weapons of Argentine troops, helped to define who could be the winners of this conflict. The Argentines lost the islands in good law, the law of combat. Today, Argentina have nothing to reclaim to England, even though we think that these islands always will be ours With reference to our neighbor, Chile; I just say: -poor pets-. South America saw what they are able to do for a penny. "The only thing able to console a man for the stupid things he does, is the pride that gives when do it " (Oscar Wilde). "No regrets, no hates, we have to work hard, to recover the friendship lost" Néstor, from Argentina.

The people who own the islands are the ones that who have always lived there. They have built the towns up,farmed the land and raised their family's there for hundreds of years. If the Falkland islanders want to be part of the UK then so be it. That is democracy!

The Falklands can be nothing but British as long as those lioving there want to be British. Argentina simply wants to ethnically cleanse the islands for their own use. When they landed in 1982, it was simply an act of aggression which simply put means that Argentina started the war, not Britain. British forces were sent there simply to expel occupational forces from territory belonging to people who wish to remain British. The consequences were dire for them but that is tough, they had to be kicked off of the land they wanted to steal. I have been to Argentaina the people were fantastic but get over it. You claim Britain to be Imperialistic but listen to yourselves, you want to determine your rule on people who dont want you there, what would you do kick them off of the islands, make them speak Spanish, arrest those who dont comply? What is your government trying to hide by bringing all this up agian, watch your backs Pedro.

Certainly not, I'm not pro military exactly the opposite, but also I'm truly pro information, another evidence that should take in count you is that an argentinian speaks about recognize the autodetermination of the islanders, that proof I'm not tat military kid you just said. And about the conflict, with an enormous technology difference between armies, the british had a very bad time, only a ship to return to England (this was said for a British Almirant in a BBC and History Channel Documental). The remarkable here it's than the strongest Navy of the world it was only to a boat of lose a was with a military insignificant country from south america, shame on you, proud of us. Here you to be more informed the British lost: British Aircraft shoot down: 6 BAC Sea Harrier FRS.1 4 BAC Harrier GR.3 3 Boeing CH-47 Chinook HC-1 5 Westland Sea King HC-4/HAS 9 Westland Wessex HAS-3/HU-5 3 Westland Lynx HAS-2 1 Westland Scout AH-1 3 Aerospatiale 342 Gazelle AH-1 And for sure you must know as the specialist you are, that the Argentinian Aircrafts were almost interceptors, not fighters as the Sea Harriers, the interceptors can't fight against a fighter, but even these you have a lot of casualties, and you also have the air-air sidewinder missiles, we shoot down you're airplanes only with cannonry. British Ships sunk or destroyed: Destructor tipo 42 clase Sheffield (D-80) HMS Sheffield (hundido por el Comando de Aviación Naval) Destructor tipo 42 clase Sheffield (D-118) HMS Coventry Fragata tipo 21 clase Amazon (F-184) HMS Ardent (hundida por el Comando de Aviación Naval) Fragata tipo 21 clase Amazon (F-170) HMS Antelope Buque logístico de desembarco (L-3005) RFA Sir Galahad Buque logístico de desembarco (L-3505) RFA Sir Tristam (posteriormente reflotado y puesto en servicio) Portacontenedores civil Atlantic Conveyor (hundido por el Comando de Aviación Naval) Lancha de desembarco Foxtrot 4 Total: 8 (ocho) British Ships several damaged: Portaaviones liviano (R-05) HMS Invencible Destructor clase County (D-18) HMS Antrim Destructor clase County (D-19) HMS Glamorgan (dañado por un Exocet de la Armada Argentina lanzado desde tierra) Destructor tipo 42 clase Sheffield (D-88) HMS Glasgow Fragata tipo Leander (F-56) HMS Argonaut (dañada también de menor consideración por el Comando de Aviación Naval) Fragata tipo 12 clase Rothesay (F-126) HMS Plymouth Buque logístico de desembarco (L-3004) RFA Sir Bedivere Buque logístico de desembarco (L-3029) RFA Sir Lancelot Total: 7 (siete) British Ships damaged: Portaaviones Liviano (R-12) HMS Hermes Fragata tipo 22 clase Broadsword (F-88) HMS Broadsword Fragata tipo 22 clase Broadsword (F-90) HMS Brilliant Fragata tipo 21 clase Amazon (F-174) HMS Alacrity Fragata tipo 21 clase Amazon (F-173) HMS Arrow Fragata tipo 21 clase Amazon (F-185) HMS Avenger Total: 5 (cinco) Now you know! And the human casualties were: Argentinians 649 (377 from the coward attack of the ARA Belgrano outside the war zone) so in combat 272 British 255 And 3 civilians islanders for a mistake of the HMS Avanger that cannon that house as a mistake…my god) Now you can say that you are informed!

Instead of the Falklands War it should be called The War of the Desperate Despots. Both overwhelmingly unpopular at home and knowing that there's nothing like a war to get everyone behind you.....as long as you win!

The Spanish colonists (including decendents) in Argentina should give the country back to the indiginous population. True Argentianians should then evidence their period of colonisation of the Falklands before the UK and Spain. If proven, then a case could be discussed with the UK to return the islands. The matter should not rely on the fact the islands are nearer their country. If that were the logic, Ireland and Britain should be "handed back" to France and Australia given to Vietnam. The history of these islands has sadly often been deliberately misrepresented to the sad extent of General Galtieri sending young men to their deaths. All other commentators should read an unbiased history first before making such ridiculous comments. How would any of us like to be deposed from our homes based on outright lies? This is not some political football, but the homes of real people who have lived there for generations. How many Americans would leave to return the country native americans? Would all the Spanish and Brazilians decendents return home?

I agree with you mike, Thatcher sent the task force purely out of pride and for her own benefit. What does the british government want with a small island 8000 miles away, OIL PERHAPS????????

Who really won the war anyway? Argentina got rid of Galtieri and eventually democracy was restored. We got stuck with Thatcher for another 8 years!

I think Nicolas has been watching to many argentine proppaganda films, he is very silly to post comments like he has done above. my 2 uncles fought in the war so ive got alot of knowledge about the war. I've got nothing against argentina, they are a proud nation.

What is really galling is that all Galtieri had to do was WAIT! White papers were going through parliament to strip the Navy of one of its aircraft carriers along with both assault ships and to strip the Falkland Islanders of their British Citizenship. The Task Force would have been untenable with only one carrier and the landings much more hazardous without the assault ships. It's also worth considering, given the number of lives lost, that, until the sinking of the Belgrano, the only bloodshed was the death of the Argentine Marine commander in Stanley and the slight wounding of a Royal Marine on South Georgia.

Im sorry Nicolas but you sound like a patriotic school child. Ive got 2 things i would like to discuss with you. 1) The argentine pilots were very brave but were no match for the RAF, the RAF shot down many argentine aircraft without a single lose. 2) The British land forces are regarded as some of the best in the world, and that comes from American generals. The argentines would never win on the battlefield. These are FACTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please talk sense and realistic before you post a comment...

When the British colonised the falklands, Argentina as a nation never even existed....... So that argument is blown out of the water. Its called democracy...when the majority of Falklanders want to be Argentine, so be it.......

Sorry, it weren't outnumber, check the british soldiers in the float, and the argentinians on the island, if Argentina wants the only way for the UK to win the war would be a nuclear bomb in Buenos Aires, because as the documental correctly said, you win the battle only because the exocet missiles didn't explote, the Argentinian Air Force kick the as of the RAF and the Royal Navy, and the Argentinian Army did not faugh, we could settle on the island 30 thousand commandos , and you never win....only with an A-Bomb. You should thank the american satellites, the Chilean cowards and the Argentinian Army. And let add something, differently to most of my fellow countrymen I recognize that we should accept and take notice of the importance of the right of the islanders to choose their nationality. And thanks for not censure any comment.

overall the british task force was heavily outnumbered, thats FACT!! I agree that the war helped Thatchers status but Argentina started the conflict. If you give a conscript a machince gun in a well fortified position then they will cause damage, they were also well equiped.

Chris are you the moderator ? because you are ansewring my original comment. You are right I'm not a war expert I'm talking of decency . England invade Malvinas as it did with half of the world in a first place, there is any comment about that 1000 years of robery ? do you remember Mr. Gandhi, a second Jusus had to come to earth to liberate India.......... On the other hand your lovely Tatcher was the one giving the order to shoot our Crucero Gral Belgrano out of the war area, how will you call that ???? I was arrested in Benos Aires because I personally hit Gualtieri in the street, why don't you do the same with this stupid of Cameron He is using the same tactics to agitate and robed our petroleoum, you are ROBERS my friend, just white glove robers, that's all

Chris not UK, but Margaret Thatcher needs the war, aldo the Militars in Argentina, but let me correct you the British forces were't outnumbered, the Argentinian Forces on the Islands were only about 8 thousand soldiers, most of them conscript, not proffesional soldiers, only the Argentina Air Force faught with all the force and supplies.

  • Chris S

The sinking of the Belgrano was tragic, alot of people lost their lives, but it had to be sunk because it was a threat to the task force whether inside or outside the war zone.

Im disappointed in your comment RAUL. The UK never wanted war, it was Argentina who started the war by invading the islands. Considering we were fighting a war 8000 miles away and heavily out numbered, unprepared, I think it was a great victory with the odd heavily stacked against us. You really have no understanding of war, you give anybody a machine gun in a well fortified position and they will cause some damage, training or no training.

War... I it hard to believe that people stil try to find explanations to these events. When your life is in your hands, you pull the trigger, no questions, no remorse. Who can argue that? Viewing all this 30 years later, without proper context, is naive, at least. And I hate that. EVERYONE evaluates the past as if it happened yesterday and consistently arrives at stupid and invalid conclussions. The world has changed, you can't use your current eyes to evaluate this war. Or is the Pope supposed to go to be sentenced for what the Church did during the Inquisition? Come on... grow up.
