Royal Marines: Mission Afghanistan

Series 1 - Episode 2: Venus Fly Trap

To view this page ensure that Adobe Flash Player version 10.0.0 or greater is installed.

A massive effort by the coalition forces to return the village of Loy Manda to its former prosperity is underway. L Company patrol the area around the semi-deserted village. Their task is to act as a magnet to draw enemy aggression away from the restoration work.

The old bazaar at Loy Manda is being cleared of hundreds of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) by the Royal Engineers whilst a British Female Engagement Team (FET), drawn from the British Army and the Royal Navy, are trying to persuade Afghan women to take an active part in rebuilding the community.

For this work to succeed and for the people to feel safe enough to return to their homes, the Taliban must be kept away at all costs. The marines at Toki are in constant danger from Taliban attack as well as the countless IEDs that riddle the areas they must patrol every day. The marines have already lost four men in the protection of Loy Manda but they must continue to take the fight to the enemy.

After a tense patrol lasting four hours the marines start to intercept Taliban radio traffic. From this
they can tell the enemy is nearby, watching and waiting to attack. The trap is set – but will it all go according to plan?

This was a brillaint progamme and should be seen by everyone, especially the politicians, as they would bring our troups home right away after seeing the futility of a war where we shouldnt be involved. However, it made you proud of all our servicemen and the brave daily job they are doing. Stunning programme, cant wait to see the rest of the programmes.

This lying politicos who's actions have resulted in these guys being out in Afghanistan should be made to watch this. The way the Royal Marines quietly get on with their duty whilst being in a hell-on-earth of enemy landmines and mortars is simply awe-inspiring. The snakes who sent them are beneath contempt.

Only when you see stuff like this can anyone appreciate the sacrifices these men (and women) make. Professionalism under pressure. Even in war, these guys stick to the rules. No women, no children. The Taliban put women and children in immediate danger and then expect to be treated humanely when caught (Which they are by our troops. Again, professionalism). I'm grateful that these men do what they do. I wouldn't have the balls to do it.

We were both devastated for him and his family when they said what had happened. I hope with all my heart that he recovers well. The 2 nd programme was something like out of the film "Apocalypse Now". It showed how totally dangerous every second it is for those soldiers. The action scene made you feel as though you were there and was scary to watch let alone be there, yet it was totally unmissable. How ironic that the soldier who got inured at the end said it was his last visit and his wife would divorce him if he went back and we know now he never will. It is to soldier like him and others who have lost their lives completely, we own our debt and gratitude. We should come out asap. This series should be shown to everyone in this country, no matter, race, creed or colour to remind us here of whats going on there on a daily basis. (the camera work is excellent).

Whilst watching, "Vicey" quickly became one of my favourites, so I was gutted when I learn't what had happened to him at the end. He'd said earlier this was his 4th tour out there and he was still larger than life and giving it some, and you could just tell him he was an important person on that compound. I hope he gets back to some kind of normal life, and my utmost respect and admiration to all the young men and women who serve this country.

Totally gutted to hear that 'Vicey' has been so badly injured. We can only hope he gets the treatment and aftercare he's going to need to rebuild his life.Unfortunately as this programme progresses I belive there will be more shocks in store. We would do well to remember that these guys are for real and not actors in a made for TV drama.Everyone a true hero.

    Leeroy's sister!

I am so proud of my partner every, single day for what he does with the Marines. However, he and most of the others i've met shy away from the praise that we all lavish upon them because they genuinely love what they do and don't see it as 'work'. I wish I had a job I could see in the same light! But on the flip side, I know how much he/they appreciate having an endless network of support back home to get them through the deployments. Which seem to go on forever at points. The armed forces (collectively) are one of the very few things which make our country a great one. The term 'hero' is thrown around far too often to label celebrities... these guys are the real 'heroes'.

Ditto to everything said about Paul Vice and those who have been killed and injured before him. In response to ChrisM and what looks like an M4 carbine, check out the L129A1 Sharpshooter rifle on MoD websites. For all of you below a certain age and an ambition to fulfil, it may be worth checking out the adverts for the reserve forces (I know one was shown when this episode first aired). For the chance to make some great friends, do your bit even if not directly on the front line, stay fit, etc, I have found it a very positive experience, doing my bit at Bastion.

My lad passed out in August after 32 weeks of hell as he put it but training as we know it and joined 42 straight from Lympstone. We aren't from a military background and were more than surprised that he wanted to join the Royals and endure the toughest basic training in the world. But it changed him within weeks, he was confident talked all the things a 19 year old isn't! I've met some of the lads he passed out with and they are the politest lads you could meet. They are all part of one big family, you can see from this programme that they all stick together and will do anything to help each other. Hat off to you Paul I just hope my lad lives up to the standards you have set. Good luck to you and all of your family.

I read an article from chris terrel saying 7 marines where killed in total while doing this documentary. I heard him say 4 in total have been killed last night. Therefore, 3 will be killed in the bext 4 episodes im sad to say. Also i have a suspicion that he may have focused on marines that something happened to. WOW such a powerful programme it lead you right down the path then bang what a shock. I am an ex Rockape and watched the programme with my daughter who is going into the Royal Navy and my son who is nearly 11 we cried as a family, My daughter said That why I am going into the Navy dad because of people like Paul Vice and my son said it makes me want to be a marine more than ever.He knows from watching programmes like this that war is like a computer game it's much more serious than that How do I react to this as a Dad I have seen things myself that I never wanted my kids to see or hear about now they want to be a part of it... My grandfather was a pilot during the Battle of Britain and thats why I joined up. I would like to say Thank You Paul for all you have done along with every serving member of the forces you Help to keep us safe and we take so much for granted because of you guys and girls. Just to reply to the message from Corporal Paul Vice, it so go to see you post on here. Many, many people were shocked by the end of the second programme, but thank god that your injuries are not too great, as shown by your presence at The Sun's Millies awards. I spent 13 years in the mob, but never saw the sort of stuff that todays British Forces are going through. I have huge respect to you Mr Vice, and all those who are serving overseas at the moment. I feel so much pride for you all. And also, I tip my hat to Chris Terrill for making this documentary, this is award winning filming. Just to add to what Sue had to say 24 minutes ago, she is damn right. This government and the one before should hang their heads in shame at what they are doing to Her Majesty's Armed Forces. Low pay, poor equipment {much of the time}, poor living conditions, and what of the wounded troops, and the bereaved families. Our governments choose to almost ignore them, rather paying out huge compensation payouts to some civvy in MOD who tripped over their own self-centered importance. Our troops deserve so much more from the government that sends them out to these conflicts. The military don't start wars. Politicians start wars. This programme shows just how worthwhile our Forces truly are. The people of Britain are proud of Our Forces.

However, this reinforced just how dangerous this posting is & the reality of the daily danger our brave solders face whilst in theater . Get well soon.

God, since I watched these two programmes I can think of little else. The true bravery of these marines doing an outstanding job in the face of such adversity. They are like sitting ducks though against the Taliban. They don't stand a chance against such dirty tactics employed by those scum who think they are going to paradise for hiding behind normal citizens and children, and their IEDs and can blend in with their fellow countrymen like the cowards they are. And like Vicey said, its not a matter of "if" but "when" the marines get caught eventually. This should put everything else in perspective in terms of people getting worked up about life's trivialities and mindless violence happening on our streets. These guys (and their brave families) deserve the utmost respect. They should be treated by our Government in the way they deserve for doing such a thankless task. Good on the programme makers for highlighting the reality of life in Afghanistan. While it seems a hopeless cause, it does show that there are decent people living there who do support the troops. I hope upon hope that there will one day be an end to this situation and that the Taliban will be beaten, and our lads and lasses can pull out of that hell hole. Its heartbreaking to know so many of our brave troops will be killed or maimed during their front line service. I am so proud of them all and am so glad to know that Paul "Vicey" Vice is on the road to recovery.

When the picture 'froze' on Paul at the end of the programme, my stomach instantly dropped and a wave of dread washed over me. I didn't want to hear what Chris Terill was about to tell us, and even now, having listened to his narration, I don't recall what he said on the programme last night. My memory just jumps from the 'freeze frame' to the picture of Paul in his hospital bed. I, like many of the above, have had Paul and his horrific injuries on my mind when I went to bed last night, when I awoke this morning and has haunted me all day. It is with a massive sense of relief that I have learnt from messages here, and also from 'googling' like never before, that Paul has come out the other side thanks to the ingenuity of one of his colleagues at the time, the medics in the field and also the excellent team at the QEH in Birmingham who saved my partner's life in 2009. Paul, god bless you, your colleagues, the 'top blokes' you spoke of who are no longer with us, and all of our great nation's servicemen and women. All I can do is offer you and all in our armed forces my eternal gratitude for your dedication, devotion and courage - Mr Cameron, the 'least ' you can do now is bring our troops home.

I had spent the hour thinking,"need to tell my pals about vicey, what a bloke" and then I saw the last few minutes. Hero is a short word for such outstanding people, they deserve the best of medical help and attention for risking their lives for us all. My brother left the Army in Nov 11 after 22 years, he was an RSM who had been to Afghanistan as part of his service. I am so proud of him and all the armed forces for the wonderful job that you do. I appreciate the risks you take daily. This is a wonderful program and Im so glad I tuned in. Politicians should be made to watch this when they are discussing their budget cuts!!!! A tremendously inspirational programme. It shows the matter of fact way that these people constantly put their lives in danger as they normally go about their work. Seeing the remarkable way that Vicey and Lt Simon ??? have treated their (what to me looked like major) injuries and are living life normally. I hope it is normally. They have both inspired me to look at my life differently - and if they can overcome injuries, then I can do better. Thank you to the programme makers, all the people who were included in the film, the families of those who must have been pleased to see their people - and at the same time forced to face their working lives, which I think we all cannot understand. All we can do is support their lives and be thankful that someone is prepared to do work which we would be unable to do.
