Submarine School

Series 1 - Episode 1 - For Your Eyes Only

To view this page ensure that Adobe Flash Player version 10.0.0 or greater is installed.

Introduction to the five young officers who are taking part in the Perisher Course as they begin the all-important sea phase of the course.

It’s straight in at the deep end as the face one of the toughest training exercises ever devised, called “Eyes Only”. Basically, using only a periscope and a stop watch they must play “chicken” with charging warships. The object is to dive if and when a warship gets dangerously close. There’s a very real danger of calamitous collision and Teacher must take over more than once to swiftly dive the submarine out of danger

The students also face the seemingly straightforward task of loading and unloading specialist
reconnaissance troops, dropped by helicopter into a remote Scottish sea loch. The dress rehearsal turns to farce and the students must get their act together fast or face the chop.

But this is Channel 5 showing it, not the History Channel. As Col says, it has not even been aired on Channel 5 yet. So no matter how fast the BBC iplayer is, even they dont show un aired programs. So just chill !

Done perisher many times during sm service, and believe me, i have seen some of the 'perishers' near to tears with the stress. The price of failure? Back to General Service, the ultimate disgrace.

good programme, but awfull "gung ho " narration,..interesting update on the old 1980s "jonathon crane " perisher done on an old diesel "o" boat ...same as the ODIN that i served on,...again updated with " SPLENDID " in the late 90s,..but still basically the same layout of the course,..it was good to hear they still work in proper yards, but to hear depth in metric was appalling, ( normally i would turn it off at that ) but overall a very good programme, well done to the production team,...keep it up and ditch the "soap opera" rubbish that is dumming us all down.

How badly can you edit and present what should be a great programme ? The BCC did this much better twenty odd years ago; no loss that Episode 1 isn't avaialble. Shame.

Can't believe I was turned down for this. Apart from maybe the American this lot are absolutely crap at maths. Just because I didn't have two A Levels. RN = Pompous + Ill Conceived. They don't ask for specific subjects, and this fact means they are missing a trick when it comes to sourcing good officers.

Great programme.Brought back memories of my time in boats and ships and running up and down the Clyde on perisher course duty. Could have done without the cod names like Filthy, american dan etc.

Great Programme ...i read anothers comment yes it is narrated in a"Gung Ho way " which takes away the professionalism of these guys...There was also a comment made by Kim Perks he said "The boat needs to be kept safe" I agree it carries a very precious cargo our husbands and sons as well as keeping our world a safer place..we can replace subs but not our sons..i Loved it as a forces Ex Officers wife with a son on subs it was a amazing insite to what life is like on subs, I was horrified when my son joined as a ranker but was very proud after spending 20yrs socialising in Officers mess to being able to muck in with the guys...My son joined when he was 23 and has grown into a very professional young man...thankyou for that. But we do need more subs and men to take the load off them and allow time for them to be able to expand as young men, and not wait for them to crack under pressure and then its too late...Loved your programme well done as for sourcing good officers they should be looking at the young men that have been serving on subs they know what is expected from them from the begining...
