Manson started her music career performing back-up vocals and keyboards for a local band, Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie. In 1993, she signed with MCA Records to record her side project Angelfish and received notoriety for her single Suffocate Me. In 1994, she began vocal work with Butch Vig, Duke Erikson and Steve Marker, the original members of Garbage.

Soon after, Garbage invited Manson to become a full-time member of the band and complete their self-titled debut album. In 1995, Garbage was released to critical acclaim and immediate commercial success and the band went on to release their next album, Version 2.0, in May 1998.

During their two-year tour promoting Version 2.0, Garbage recorded the theme song to the James Bond movie The World Is Not Enough, and Manson focused on improving her guitar skills for their third album.

The band have gone on to release a further three studio albums: beautifulgarbage in 2001, Bleed Like Me in 2005 and Not Your Kind of People in 2012.
