Series 9 - Mansion Lions, Eastbourne

Mansion Lions, Eastbourne

Sorry, this episode is no longer available to watch on Demand 5.

Find out why

Alex visits Eastbourne and the three-star, 110-bedroom Mansion Lions Hotel. The flamboyant owner, Mr Sheikh Abid Gulzar, dreams of turning the hotel into a four-star establishment. Mr Gulzar describes the hotel’s design as 'rich and good looking, just like myself'; however, Alex soon discovers the hotel’s décor and customer service is desperately lacking.

Alex worries that the steady stream of coach tours are being badly served by a diet of unimaginative food and entertainment, and wants the Mansion Lions to drop its four-star pretentions and concentrate upon improving its reviews. But her plan to make the hotel the best three-star in Eastbourne soon suffers a serious setback.

I think the owner's ego is still smarting from his portrayal on this program. Look at all the reviews someone has written on here praising the hotel, obviously written by an 'insider'. Everyone else who's appeared on the program has managed to take their lumps and get on with it, but not this guy. I think that says quite a bit about the type of person.

I cannot fathom how anyone would stay in this hotel after seeing the owner berate one of the guests for complaining about a room.

i just watched The Hotel Inspector at the Lions Hotel Eastbourne. I used to think that it was a true report of what Alex saw. Unfortunately, having stayed at that hotel, this absoutley was'nt how i found it. the hotel was a whole lot worse than she potrayed. We were charged £120.00 for a room half the size of the one she stayed in. It was at the back of the hotel, so no seaviews, just pigeon poop views and the most cheap, horrific decor i have ever seen. Alex actually portrayed the dump as a not-to-bad hotel!! It is totaly the worst hotel we have ever been to and the 5star price for a 1star hotel. Fortunately i did,nt have the misfortune of meeting Mr Gulzar, who on the tv comes accross as vulgar. vulgar Gulzar!. If Alex is going to present a rograme such as this she should make sure that is very exact report of hotel in question. I used to watch this programe all the time, howeer having seen this hotel for myself, and seeing the very tame way in which she edited this particular hotel, i will not be watching again.

Just a matter of fact, and to add to people's knowledge Mansion Lions Hotel does more than 15000 nights in an year. over 5 years it is around 75000 or more nights. out of these if only 50 or so people have commented on trip adviser I am not sure if it is a fair image being portrayed. Alex has good knowledge but Mr. Gulzar initially started with 1 hotel, at the time of programme had 4 hotels and by now has 5 hotels where as Alex's grand father Mr. Forte had a big massive group of Hotels out of which only 1 is left for Alex which also if she is busy with TV shows I am sure is being run by Management. who should we praise more, Mr. Gulzar or Alex.

I'm from Eastbourne never be in any of lions hotels but if doubt they are struggling very much as his son has got a Lamborghini one Bentley with a gold on it and and a land rover with gold on it as well so they must be doing something right

Also note that the owner has a 400-acre farm. 400 acres! This is an indication that he must really be overcharging the guests to be able to afford something like that.

I really hope that Channel Five makes this episode available again at some point, but I am not holding out much hope. Any comments from Channel Five about this?

Why on earth is this man running a hotel in Britain? With all of his bling-bling gold rings he looks totally out of place.

Just tried to get a drink at the Lions. After 1.5 hours we gave up and left. Went to the hotel he was taken to byAlex as a good hotel in the programme and was served immediately. The interior of the Lions is still outdated and not clean. I am a senior but like a good standard of cleanliness and efficient staff. Come on Sheik Gulzar, spend money to train/change staff and update your 4 Eastbourne hotels and you will recoup it very qyickly.

Please can this be made available to watch again? I watched half of it and then came back to watch the other half a day or two later and it had gone! Also, has anyone noticed that the first approx 8 comments apart from Julie Watts' comment seem to be written in the same pigeon english and in exactly the same way and are very complimentary to Mr Gulzar etc....it is pretty obvious to me that he has posted all of those comments himself as nobody else would say any of those things and it isn't really possible that so many different people would write in such an unintelligible way. Of course I could be wrong but I very much doubt it.

No one who lives in eastbourne and knows the town would ever stay in the mansions lion hotel. Its in fact the worst place to be in eastbourne. I would rather sleep on the street. DO not go there!!!

Channel 5's on demand service is useless - the programmes are constantly buffering and stop/starting - and no, it's not the internet service as all other such websites work perfectly. And now the programmes aren't even available to watch!

we also stayed at the Mansion Lion Hotel earlier in the year for two nights. I agree with the person who said it probably was the worst hotel they had used. The staff were lovely and very helpful but the rooms were not very clean, we even found an open packet of condoms under the bed. The air conditioning did not work, the balcony doors were insecure. Too many things to mention here. We unsuccesfully tried to meet with the manager so wrote twice both to the hotel and the Eastbourne tourist office. This was in May and we have not had the courtesy of an acknowledgement. When friends ask where to stay in Eastbourbe I tell them NOT THERE. I thought that in England we needed the revenue from tourism!!!

My partner and I stayed at the Mansion Lions last Christmas and this was the worst hotel experience we ever had. Alex did not seem to touch upon any of the real problems. When we visited there were real safety problems with full gas cylinders being stored in open public places, one guest was taking pictures to send to the Health and Safety dept. the food was absolutely atrocious, on Christmas eve there was only one item on the menu when we asked for just a sandwich instead, the chef refused, eventually the assistant manager was called and several hours later some sandwiches were provided but this was too close to the evening meal time. The staff there could not have cared less. Along the corridor leading to our room there was a large screw protruding from a door panel on which my partner tore a brand new sweater. We were told to write in to the assistant manager when we returned home, we did this last January and enclosed the receipt and I am still awaiting the courtesy of a reply. At no point during our stay did the owner put in an appearance, the first time we saw him was on the tv programme and my opinion of him was that he thought too much of himself. Suffice to say we would not visit this hotel again, but what a pity Alex missed so many of the bad points, I always look forward to her programme but was quite disappointed in her Eastbourne visit.

Martha was hot! Put her to serve and customers will be very happy! The staff are fine but just need management: they have not been told what to do.

i love this program! what is it with people that own these place and think they can run them? MR GULZAR, owns/runs 4 hotels in Eastbourne all of them are in the bottom 5 of the 41 hotels there! that must say something about him and hes style of management! as for the people he has working for him, they need a kick up the bum or to grow a backbone and stand up to him and say he is wrong.... and for anyone that thinks i dont know what im talking about, ive been in the catering/hotel trade for 35yrs and would love to have the chance to turn one of these places around!

I agree Mr.Gulzar needs to make some improvements but also feel that Alex needs to understand the clientele in Eastbourne. If Bingo is out of date then so is playing old music instruments at the Eastbourne bandstand. I am sure Mr.Gulzar can make the improvements but he definitely needs to get rid of the incumbent staff who should be running the hotel in a professional manner. I do not feel they are up to the task of running a hotel. I am sure Alex would agree that to bring the changes she has advised Mr. Gulzar require a lot of finance.....perhaps he should get rid of everything and make his hotel into a budget hotel. You would have only noticed the improvements Mr.Gulzar has made to the hotel if you had seen the hotel when he purchased it!!! I have witnessed that change. P.S. for Alex the two chairs in the room appeared to be very comfortable and suitable for older people who the normal clients at the hotel. So I do not feel that all your criticism was justified and meaningful.

the only thing I can say is if Mr.Gulzar have got the advise of a person like Aalex and brought it in willing to have a show and expouse his hoteland himself that proves he is a open business man.The only thing that matters in this case is he wants to know how he can improve his business.Well done Mr.Gulzar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mr.Gulzar is a very brave business man to have in his hotel the inspector as most of people would not bare a constructive critisism,as he said if is to make my hotel better I would not mind to have some one like the inspector to help us out to improve the hotel.Well done Mr.Gulzar and Inspector. We need more people like Mr.Gulzar in town.
