The owner of The New Lyngarth, Blackpool, took over the derelict 15-bedroom building in 2009 and has grand plans for his seaside hotel, hoping to pull in an upmarket, select clientele more in keeping with a private members’ club. But after a £250,000 spend on renovations, the Blackpool establishment is still suffering. With no star rating and no profits, all the hotel has managed to attract so far is bad reviews.

When water drips onto Alex’s head during breakfast, the full extent of the problems begin to unfold and, after her attempts to inject some new life into the hostelry are met with scepticism, she wonders if the hotel will ever make the grade. Alex hopes to turn things around by bringing the hotel up to scratch and getting the establishment an accreditation from the tourist board, Visit England. But in her quest to get the owner to reach for the stars, will the hotel and its profit possibilities end up in the gutter?

    We just watched the show in NZ. The only way your stars would be taken from you is when inspectors make yet another surprise visit...it obviously wasn't up to scratch- no surprises there! Cooking eggs in that much oil is totally revolting...perhaps stars revoke had to do with health inspection? Who knows? It must be so frustrating having a brain like Andrews...some mothers do ave em =/

    i recently stayed at Bentleys Andrew was lovely and nothing was too much trouble for him he was available day and night he was friendly and made me feel very welcome thank you Andrew and good luck such a shame you are thinking of leaving.

    Demand.....Is it Richard Branson trying to get me onto Virgin For some reason when ever this programme got to the ads it froze so I couldnt see how it ended, this happens alot when I'm on 5Broadband??

    For me it keeps freezing and not playing, this isnt buffering at all. This tends to happen after the adverts. Its happened with about 3 episodes of the hotel inspector and there is nothing wrong with my internet either. Can you please fix this?

    I’m missing some background detail here, but I suspect this gentleman has little or no professional training or experience in the hospitality business or any other and that the £400,000 or so he has put into the hotel has come from an inheritance or other private source rather than through the rigorous process of writing a business plan and convincing a bank manager to stump up the money. For people in this position, the road to hell is a short one! I am glad to read that the guy decided to give up, I hope he got most if not all of his money back and learned from the experience - the hospitality business is not for him!

    I actually can not believe the ignorance of this man, he has down graded the blackpool area and changed the way people view small b&bs and hotels. I'm glad he has decided to close and sell, hopefully to someone more willing to improve the hospitality business

    Just a nod to Channel 5 for moderating. It's very easy to be abusive in these forums extremely quickly and it is not something I would want to read. So thank you for monitoring.     Andrew.. good luck with your new venture. I hope it all works out for you. Two tips: 1) Use an oil-based undercoat when repainting signage so the old sign does not show through; 2) Keep your trousers pulled up! Good luck.

    I am the owner of The New Lyngarth/Bentleys and after reading the comments feel that I have to write this. Firstly, thank you to all who have made very positive comments about the show, one of the reasons why I have decided to sell is that I also have a hotel abroad and I am wanting to persue that venture - I feel that with the hard work I have put into the place and with the hard work Alex has put in it has now reached a point where the hotel can move forward under new ownership - the hotel is still trading and operating. Secondly, I would like to make clear that I DID NOT lose my star rating, since I purchased the property I was always in 2 minds whether to go down the star rating route - getting involved in Alex brought it to a head and as you can see from the programme I was awarded a 3 star rating - I traded as a 3 star hotel for 6 months and after reviewing it decided that the 3 star rating quite frankly was not of any benefit to the hotel or its business - Blackpool is awash with 3 star hotels. After a discussion with the local tourist board in which I was advised "the star rating system does not work for all hotels/b & b's" - I decided to withdraw from the scheme. However, although I have withdrawn from the scheme I still operate the same standards as if I was rated.
