Episode 2: Red Hair and Silver Tape

The agents are called to a vineyard in Napa County where the body of a young, red-haired woman has been discovered. The victim was bound with duct tape and smothered to death. After surveying the scene for a moment, Patrick delivers his verdict. "Her killer didn't intend for her to die this way," he says. Patrick's theory is that a local man abducted the girl and was taking her somewhere to sexually assault her when she began screaming. In an attempt to keep her quiet, the abductor covered the girl's mouth and accidentally suffocated her. The county sheriff, like many of the CBI agents, is not convinced.

Upon learning the victim's name - Melanie O'Keefe - the agents head to her house and break the news to her family. Melanie's parents insist that their daughter was a good girl and explain that she had taken a purity pledge. But a look around the girl's bedroom leads Patrick to a different conclusion. After seeing an incomplete photograph showing Melanie with a friend, Patrick decides that she must have had a secret boyfriend. "She has a lover," he tells his colleagues. "He's either too old, too closely related or too villainous to tell the folks about."

Teresa leads her team to the winery restaurant where Melanie worked as a waitress. The owners of the establishment, married couple Sandra and Malcolm Boatwright, explain that Melanie left work late the previous night, but are unable to offer any further information. Patrick recognises one of the waitresses as the girl from the photograph in Melanie's room. When the waitress, Raquel, denies knowing Melanie well, the agents know she is lying and bring her in for questioning.

Initially, Raquel refuses to co-operate, but Patrick resorts to some controversial tactics to make her talk. Before long, Raquel has told the agents that Melanie was having a relationship with a drug dealer called Hector Ramirez, and was due to meet him on the night of her death. It is a great result for the agents, but Teresa is suspicious as to why Raquel gave up Ramirez so easily. "You hypnotised her, didn't you!" she spits, as Patrick slinks away.

While Ramirez is tracked down and arrested, Patrick follows up another line of enquiry. A month before this case, another red-haired girl was bound with duct tape and abducted. On that occasion, the girl was left unharmed and dumped in a motel room. Patrick theorises that both attacks may have been carried out by the same person - a would-be rapist who has yet to pluck up the courage to go through with his attacks. "He's new to this and he's conflicted," says Patrick of his imagined suspect. "Or you're making all that up," retorts a weary Teresa. "Most of the time, the obvious guy did it - it was Hector."

However, Patrick pursues his hypothesis and sets about phoning local motels to see if a room was booked but not used by somebody on the night of the murder. Sure enough, one motel owner reports that a man wearing a ludicrous disguise booked a room for a long stay, but has not come back since. When Patrick visits the room in question, he finds duct tape, gloves, plastic sheeting and bleach in one of the cupboards. Now convinced that the killer plans to strike again, Patrick convinces Wayne, Grace and Kimball to join him in an elaborate sting operation to catch the killer red-handed. However, even Patrick is not prepared for what happens next.
