contract mobile phones are usually free & for as little as £7.50 a month you can get 300 call minutes & 500 texts& all for 1/2 the cost of a land line alone.I have one myself. Schools need to be able to contact parents should a child not arrive at school & visa versa for child safety, to phone doctor & in other emergencies. Just suppose an ambulance was needed? to say a phone is not a necessity is nonsence & at less than £2 a week for this life line? Most people on benefit are struggling & I would think that smoking and drinking are luxuries that we can do without. I do not feel that the panel were justified in their commens as they appear not to have all the information to enable them to comment fairly. they live in a different world to us.

are mobiles necessary contract phones can cost as little as £7.50 a month with a free phone, 300 minutes,500 free texts a month[I have one myself]. This is about half the cost of a land line alone and less then £2 a week. Without a phone how are schools to alert you if kids don't arrive at school and vise versa?you need to phone a doctor or in another emergency? often even pay-as-you-go are not paid for by parents and are given as presents. I know many people who have no landline the contract mobile being the cheaper option, I think the panel are often too quick to make judgements without knowing the facts.
