In this opening episode, presenter Chris Tarrant sets off an emotional journey to find out about his father Basil's role in the British army during World War II. He knows that Basil won the Military Cross, one of the highest honours a serving soldier can be awarded, but he has no idea what he did to deserve it - and, as the story unfolds, he struggles to come to terms with his father's heroics.

Meanwhile, actress Lisa Faulkner seeks out the story of her grandfather's involvement in the conflict, as a member of the RAF. 'Lelly', as she knew him, was her favourite grandfather, but he died when she was quite young. In the time that she knew him, Lisa never asked about his experiences, and now she wants to find out exactly what he did and the contribution he made to British history.

Great subject matter, but FGS why on earth can't these programme makers do one story at a time, instead of chopping back and forward from one to the other. Clumsy viewing, not fluid, makes it hard to follow, and consequently each of the two very interesting stories all mash into one by the end of the programme. WHY the heck do they do it!!!!!!

Likewise all I can get is the ads, it just keeps buffering. And I've a good broadband connection so don't know what the problem is. But I shall persevere as I really want to see it.

Will there be another series, and also a series featuring non celeb families? as all who fight in wars are heros.

Great programme - pity it was not better publicised. I only found out about it on Friday morning via an e mail from my genealogy website. We have really lousy broadband but actually this episode played better than BBC or ITV online. I would stil rather have seen it on tv, though. I would like to see the issue of Civil Defence workers though - as my grandad was ARP and I have no idea how to find his service records. He was medically exempt from army service but I can find nothing about his service or even the tribunal that exempted him

Cannot understand why people mention ads and problems viewing it. I watched it a few minutes ago 11.45 am 4th May 2012 without a hitch and no ads at any time. Wonderful program! Will be watching remainder of the series. Well done Channel 5!

As a soldier currently serving in Hohne(British Army Camp next to Belsen) I have visited the concentration camp on many occasions and it never ceases to be a moving experience. I would like to congratulate Channel 5 for a great programme and looking forward to the rest of the series !!!

Poor service, not a patch on BBC i player or 4OD, had a hell of a job to get it to play. Managed to get the Ads to play as smooth as silk, the programme however spits and farts it's way along and is not viewable. All very disappointing.
