Former Lib Dem leader and diplomat Lord Paddy Ashdown and actress Helen Lederer trace the stories of the war heroes in their families, and make some unexpected discoveries.

Helen’s grandfather, Arnost Lederer, fled the Czech Republic before the war, to escape German anti-Semitism, but what happened to the family he left behind was unknown. Piecing together his story takes Helen on a journey to the dark heart of the Nazis’ Final Solution and she discovers how her family were used by the Nazis to deceive the Red Cross.

A former Royal Marine, intelligence officer and politician, Lord Paddy Ashdown traces the wartime experiences of his father, John Ashdown, who commanded a unique army unit: the 32nd animal transport company. In France, Paddy follows in the footsteps of the unit, which joined the British Expeditionary Force at the outbreak of World War II, and uncovers the vital role his father played in the dramatic evacuation of Dunkirk.

I love the series but HATE the constant switching between stories. Tell one story to the end and then the next story.

Channel 5 is hopeless. This is the second time I've attempted to watch this programme. First time -- 3 or 4 days ago -- I was told it was not available to view; this time, there's no message whatsoever: it just doesn't work. Why have this site if it has nothing to offer? Rubbish.
